Corporate filming in Bangladesh: a guide for international organisations

What to plan when you need a company profile, project film or video ad made in Bangladesh, from the brief to the final subtitles.

More and more international companies, embassies and development agencies run projects in Bangladesh, and sooner or later most of them need a film: a company profile, a project film for donors, a video for a trade fair or a short ad for social media. Doing this well from abroad is easier than it looks, if a few things are planned early.

Start with the audience, not the footage. A film for a board in Ankara or Washington needs a different structure from a reel for Facebook users in Dhaka. Decide who will watch, in which language, and on which screen. This decides the length, the pace and whether you need Bangla, English or Turkish subtitles, or all three.

Plan locations and permissions together. Factories, project sites and government offices usually need written permission, and some sites are hours apart. A local team that knows how long it really takes to get from Dhaka to Narayanganj or Chittagong saves you a day of shooting.

Use people, not only machines. Even an industrial film works better when an engineer, a worker or a customer explains what the product changes for them. When we filmed Galactic Makina's machines at the DTG Dhaka International Textile & Garment Machinery Exhibition, short interviews made the technical shots meaningful.

Think about the edit before the shoot. A clear shot list, a draft script and agreed brand guidelines mean the crew can capture everything in one visit. After the shoot, colour grading, sound design, motion graphics and subtitles are what make a film look international.

Finally, keep one contact person on each side. Most delays come from feedback loops, not from filming. One decision-maker and two rounds of revisions are usually enough.

FOLOK is a Dhaka-based studio that makes corporate films, project films and video ads for international organisations and companies, and works with clients in Bangla, English and Turkish.
